Community Media Day 2026
Tuesday, October 20 is Community Media Day 2026!
Community Media Day is an annual celebration that brings awareness to the importance of free speech and accessible media for all. For 34 years and counting, NewTV has proudly provided Newton with a platform where everyone can have their voices heard and stay connected to their community.
Community Media Centers like NewTV are funded primarily by cable revenues from local subscribers. As more people "cut the cord"in favor of streaming services, cable revenues decline right alongside the funding for community media.
Where Are They Now?
To celebrate Community Media Day 2026, we wanted to take you back in time to our roots. This video shows NewTV as it was in the early aughts and 1990s... all the way back to our grand opening in the basement of the Hyde Community Center in 1992.
Watch the full version of this blast to the past and learn more about Community Media Day on our Community Media Day webpage using the button below. The longer version of this video will also air on all of our NewTV cable channels for the next week.
How NewTV Serves Newton and the Surrounding Areas
NewTV does more for its community than many people may realize. In fact, we are willing to bet most Newton residents have watched something produced by NewTV without even realizing it!
Here are a few examples of the major services NewTV provides:
Fellow non-profit organizations utilize NewTV's facilities to drum-up support for their missions, educate the community, or provide a creative outlet for their own members.
Our school-to-work program allows local high school students to gain valuable real world production experience, while participating in their school's A/V Club.
Area college students studying Communications or Journalism can apply for our Newton News internship program and Lipof Fellowship. Over 100 former interns have gone onto successful careers in broadcast journalism.
As a nonprofit, we rely heavily on funding from the City of Newton, community partnerships, and contributions from supporters and viewers. Without proper funding, NewTV loses its ability to provide essential services like those listed above, just to name a few.
To help us celebrate Community Media Day this year, consider supporting NewTV. Become a member, make a donation, or become a Community Partner. We'd love to have you be a part of all the great things happening at NewTV!
Happy Community Media Day 2026! We are so glad to be an integral part of the wonderful Newton community!
