Six Debates

October 26, 2011

There are 6 contested races for the Municipal Election on November 8th. And NewTV and the League of Women Voters sponsored 6 debates to help inform the public where the candidates stand on the issues Newton faces in the next two years and beyond. This week we are showcasing  3 debates and we'll show the other 3 next week. Newton Sports Recap

This week in Newton sports news the Newton North Tigers Varsity Girls soccer team went up against the Waltham Hawks.  The story of the game was the sensational offensive performance from the Tigers forward Holly Szafran who scored all of Newton North's goals in the game.

Yeo In?

October 19, 2011

Looks like School Committee candidate, Jonathan Yeo, will be on the ballot for the Ward 2 seat.  At least for now.  Last week, Yeo won his appeal of the Middlesex's Superior Courts decision of not allowing him to run stating he was not a resident of Ward 2.  The Court of Appeals ruled he was a resident of Ward 2.  But, that decision is under appeal and will either go before a three panel judge or perhaps as high as the Supreme Judicial Court. There are only 3 weeks left to the November 8th municipal election.

Coyote Meeting

October 19, 2011

Coyotes have been encroaching on resident's property, walking along the streets and even killing a small dog.  This prompted a community meeting held at Newton Police Headquarters. Residents received information about coyotes and what to do if one gets too close. Alicia Fiori has more.

Inspirational Families

Beginning November 2, the Newton Free Library is hosting the Inspirational Families Photography Exhibit.  The month long exhibit will feature 45 portraits of Newton residents who have made a difference in Newton or around the world.  The creators of the exhibit are here to talk about what inspired them to pursue these family portraits. Welcome, Drew Hyman, Jennifer Nourse Rodman and Ken Shulman.

Yeo Out

October 12, 2011

Current School Committee member Jonathan Yeo from Ward 4 has been fighting to stay on the November ballot to run from Ward 2. Last week he lost that fight when the Middlesex Superior  Court overturned the Newton Election Commission ruling on August 15, that Yeo could indeed run from Ward 2. Middlesex Superior Court ruled he must be removed from the ballot. The issue under challenge is whether or not Yeo actually lived in his Ward 2 residence at the time nomination papers were available on March 7th. Yeo says yes, the challengers say no. Yeo has filed an appeal with the Court of Appeals and will be heard today.

Police Searching for Baby

October 5, 2011

Newton Police along with State Police are searching for a possible missing baby.  On Friday evening, a Newton resident phoned the Newton Police stating they found a note by their recycling area. The note referenced leaving a baby in a box. Police found the box, but no baby. Police searched the area and even digging up at the recycling center in Avon. But still no baby or trace of a baby.  The state police forensics team is examining the box and the letter to see who and where it may have come from.  But in the meantime, Newton Police are asking the public for help.

Setti Warren Steps Down From Senate Race

October 5, 2011

You may have heard by now that Mayor Setti Warren is no longer a candidate for US Senator from Massachusetts with the hopes of beating Scott Brown.   He announced with his family and supporters last week that the reason he is stepping aside is that he doesn't feel he can win at this time. The emergence of Democratic Candidate Elizabeth Brown and his campaign in debt, Warren is stepping aside. To talk more in-depth about Warren's decision is Newton News Political Analyst, Ron Lipof.

First Mayor's Portrait

October 5, 2011

James F.C. Hyde was Newton's first Mayor elected in 1873. A portrait of him done by Ni-um Orthank in 1874 hung in room 209 for years since 1933. But it ended up in the attic and began to deteriorate.  With the help of $52 hundred dollars in CPA funds, the portrait is now restored and hanging in the Aldermanic Chambers of City Hall. City Clerk David Olsen gives us an oral history of the portrait.
