18 percent of Newton’s voter turned out to the polls on Election Day.  Mayor Setti Warren presented his capital improvement plan to the city this week.  And 45 Families in Newton had the privilege of having their photographs on the walls of the Newton Free Library.  All this and more on Newton News!

Rivalry Remains

November 23, 2011

It’s a Thanksgiving tradition.  Before you eat your feast, the rivalry that has lasted over 100 years hits the field at 10am. This year in Brookline.  The battle for the football win is between the Newton North Tigers and the Brookline Warriors.  As part of the tradition, at least for the past 27 years, the Newton and Brookline Rotary Clubs invite the teams’ coaches and captains for lunch to bring the community spirit to the forefront.

Chair of SC

The School Committee held a caucus to find out who will be the chair and vice-chair for the next two year term.  Current Chair, Claire Sokoloff will remain as Chair and Matt Hills will serve as Vice-Chair.

Water Meter Fiasco

November 23, 2011

It seems some Newton residents are receiving quarterly water bills in the thousands of dollars. Pat Biagiotti reports that the previous water bills were estimate readings due to old water meters, while the new water meters in place are taking accurate usage readings.  This has caused outrage among residents who are wondering why the estimates were so far off.

TAC Recommends TAG

The Transportation Advisory Committee presented the mayor with a list of recommendations and goals on how to make the city friendlier to other modes of transportation besides a vehicle.  And the Mayor accepted them.  By January 1st, a Transportation Advisory Group will be in place to set policies so land use and development will have guidelines when making transportation decisions. Newton News spoke with the Chair of the Committee and the Mayor about the recommendations and when we can expect to see changes to Newton’s streets.

Free the Children

One group of Newton students is hoping to Free the Children in Africa’s hardest hit regions.  They have been selling bracelets and raising money to sponsor villages and schools.  Rachel Rousch has their story.

And there will be some changes on the School Committee and the Board of Alderman.  Two incumbents are out and 6 new faces join in. Boston Marathon & Boys and Girls Club

The Boston Marathon may be months away but building the strength and teams have begun.  This year and for the following two years, the John M. Barry Boys and Girls club of Newton will be one of the 30 charities that will benefit from the Boston Athletic Association. And they are looking for a team of volunteer runners to complete the grueling 26.2 mile marathon.  Joining me in the studio to discuss the need for volunteers is John Ryan, the Development Director at the Boys and Girls Club.

Inspirational Families

45 Families in Newton had the privilege of having their photographs on the walls of the Newton Free Library. Inspirational Families is an exhibit created to honor the many people in Newton who are generous in a variety of ways. Sarah Goodman was at the opening night and show us the photographs.

Over 500 thousand Massachusetts residents were left without power after Saturday’s nor’easter.  After a year in negotiations, the School Committee and the Newton Teachers Association have signed a 3 year contract with some changes in Healthcare and compensation.  And since August 15, the question of whether Jonathan Yeo would be on the Ballot to run for School Committee in Ward 2 has been answered, again.  All this and more on Newton News!

Power Outages

November 2, 2011

Over 500 thousand Massachusetts residents were left without power after Saturday’s nor’easter.  Newton residents were among the many.  Downed trees on wires were the main culprit of the cause and NStar and other utilities were hard at work restoring power to neighborhoods and schools. As of 11am today, 600 Newton residents are still without power.  NStar plans on restoring power to them by tonight. More information is available by calling city hall or visiting the city’s website.

NTA Contracts Signed

After a year in negotiations, the School Committee and the Newton Teachers Association have signed a 3 year contract with some changes in Healthcare and compensation.  A special meeting was held for all to sign on the dotted line.

Yeo on the Ballot

November 2, 2011

Since August 15, the question of whether Jonathan Yeo would be on the Ballot to run for School Committee in Ward 2 has been answered, again.  This time the Appellate Court said that Yeo’s name will not be stricken from the ballot.  With less than a week to go for the Election, the challengers attorney, Peter Harrington said yesterday that they will be filing a review of the decision to the Supreme Judicial Court.
