Modulars Next Phase

June 29, 2011

The modulars slated to go to three elementary schools have passed two more committees.  This week, the Finance Committee approved $923,000 for green modulars and the Conservation Committee approved placing the modulars on the land near conservation land.  Liz Albanese has more.

Charles River Prize

June 22, 2011

The Charles River is one of three rivers that are finalists for an international river-prize.  The other two are in California and Australia.  This prestigious award goes to the hard work and dedication of many workers involved with cleaning up rivers to make them a sustainable and usable resource once again.  The award will be presented to the winner in September, and if the Charles River is the winner, some of that money will go towards dredging the river of new sediment from the water main break last year.  Jessica Fahey has the story.

Blue Room Circus

Children can't wait to perform in the circus.  At least the kids from the Newton Community Service Center can't.  From lions and tigers, to tight rope acts and clowns, to the master of ceremonies, the show was fun filled for the kids, and the parents and teachers alike.

Angino Race at the YMCA

This weekend, families got together at the West Suburban YMCA to run, race, and do all kinds of activities to raise money for cancer research.  Even with stormy clouds above, dozens turned out to help any way they could.  Rachel Rousch has the story.

In the Buffer Zone - Countryside Redistricting

The School Committee approved a proposal to redistrict students from Countryside Elementary School to Angier, Zervas or Bowen for next year. This is in part because of the Countryside Task Force’s work in alleviating the overcrowding in the school.  Jessica Fahey has more.

Invasion of the Water Chestnut

For every one water chestnut seed in the Charles River… 20 more can spring up. That’s why the Charles River Watershed Association is looking for volunteers to help rid the Charles of the invasive plants.  Liz Albanese got a closer look on how the river could become a wasteland for plant and fish if the chestnuts take over.

Turocy New Head of DPW

Mayor Setti Warren announced Public Works’ interim commissioner, David Turocy is officially in charge of the department. Former Commissioner, Tom Daley left in January and Turocy has been filling in as interim since then.  Turocy has been with the city since 2005 and is a lifelong public servant.  He has spent 10 years on active duty as a member of the Navy Submarine Force and several years as a reservist.

Moving Headquarters

WS Development, the owners of Macy’s and the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center proposed plans to renovate one of its buildings on Boylston Street to possibly move their headquarters to the new space. They presented their plan at a public meeting Tuesday and will present it to the Board soon.

Herbicide Warning

The green decade coalition has been urging the city and the MBTA to get greener by using non-toxic pesticides.  While some are no longer being used, there are some herbicides still getting sprayed along the train tracks.  The green decade is asking for early notification of spray times to want the public.
