Even though Hurricane Irene dropped down to a Tropical Storm Sunday, that didn't prevent major damage from occurring throughout the city.  With the city now in itís clean up stage after Tropical Storm Irene itís time to think about the next big storm to hit.  And Newton's hidden gem, Newton Community Services Center, had some federal funding cut from its budget, but will still remain a place for people to go if they need them.  All this and more on Newton News!

Hurricane Irene

Even though Hurricane Irene dropped down to a Tropical Storm Sunday, that didn't prevent major damage from occurring throughout the city.  5000 people were without power and there 464 reports of fallen trees with 7 on homes. Newton News toured the city with Mayor Setti Warren Monday morning to access the damage.

Bottle Bill

Advocates for an updated Bottle Bill are trying to close a loophole that allows water bottles and other beverage bottles on the market that have no deposit to make a deposit required. Their hopes are to clean up the streets and streams by making all bottles worth money.  Liz Albanese has the story.

Yeo Wins Residency Challenge

A group of over 30 residents questioned Ward 4 School Committee member, Jonathan Yeoís residency to run for re-election in Ward 2.  This question was brought to Newtonís Election Commission to decide whether he was actually living in Ward 2 when he pulled his nomination papers.  Jessica Fahey tells us the over 4 hour hearing ended with results for Yeo, but that decision may not be the final one.

SOAR 55 Grant

August 17, 2011

SOAR 55, a program serving 90 nonprofits by matching 300+ skilled volunteers over the age of 55, has just received a grant of $45,000 from Tufts Health Plan Foundation. This is the third year that they have received funding from them. Liz Albanese tells us what SOAR 55 plans on doing with their funds.

Funding Vote for Contracts Postponed

The Board of Alderman delayed a vote to transfer funds for recently ratified contracts with the city. The docketers of the item want to take a closer look at the contracts to make sure they are in the best interest of the city.

Chestnut Hill Shopping Center Approved

WS Development got the go ahead from the Board of Aldermen this week to renovate their future headquarters in the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center. This is the first step to completely renovating the area to make it more pedestrian friendly and aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

New Fire Chiefs Sworn-In

It's official. Newton has a new fire chief.  33 year veteran of the Newton Fire Department Chief Bruce Proia was sworn in this morning along with 25 year veteran and now new assistant Chief, Paul Chagnon.  Here is Chief Proia talking about the future of Newton's Fire Department.

10 Municipal Contract Ratified
