Mayor's Budget

Mayor Setti Warren presented his FY 2012 budget to the Board of Alderman last week.  In it he closes a $3.2 million dollar budget gap but does it at the cost of city positions and reconfiguring city departments. Christine McCarthy has more.

Medal of Valor

April 20, 2011

It is the first time the Newton Police have honored one of their own with a Medal of Valor.  Police Chief Matt Cummings gave Officer Peter Wade the Medal of Valor for jeopardizing his personal safety when he attempted to locate and evacuate potential victims at the scene of a house fire at 10 Auburndale Ave on March 30, 2011. This was the same house fire where Off-Duty Firefighter Nick McGrath was the first person on the scene and also recognized for his heroic efforts.

Boston Marathon Volunteers

It brought thousands of runners and thousands of volunteers to help the runners.  As Christine McCarthy tells us, the volunteers make sure the runners of the 115th Boston Marathon make it to the end of the 26.2 miles.

While the volunteers were helping at various stations along the 26.2 mile route for the Boston Marathon, thousands of people came to cheer on the runners and add their own flare to fuel the runner’s fire.

Rape Aggression Defense

It’s a class for women of almost any shape, size, strength and age. If you’ve ever considered taking a self defense course, the Newton Police department is offering one for free.  It’s the RAD Class otherwise known as the Rape Aggression Defense Class that will teach you basic maneuvers to enable you to get away from an attacker.  Here’s a bit more about what to expect from the class.

John Lawn Wins Democratic Primary

Watertown Town Councilor John Lawn beat his three opponents in the Democrat’s Primary Race Tuesday. Lawn will face Republican Jim Dixon from Waltham in the May 10 Special Election to fill the seat for the 10th Middlesex District State Representative.  Ali Scotti stopped by both Sean Durkee’s and John Lawn’s campaign parties.

School Committee Approves Budget

The School Committee approved the Fiscal Year 2012 school budget in an 8 to 1 vote. It now heads to the Board of Alderman for their approval.

Newton Firefighter Honored

April 6, 2011

Newton Firefighter, Nick McGrath was honored this past week by the Mayor and the Board of Alderman for his heroism. While off-duty, McGrath was driving down Auburndale Avenue when he noticed smoke coming from the home at 10 Auburndale Avenue. He ran into the house on fire and saved the lives of a family of three living on the second floor of a three family home. The fire quickly became a three alarm fire where more than 40 firefighters worked to put the flames out.
