Modulars a Go for Designers

May 25, 2011

The School Committee voted in favor of the next phase for adding modulars to three elementary schools. The School Department is hoping the new modulars will be in place for the fall to open the new school year.  The vote was 8 to 1.

Remembering Our Veterans

It was another success for Newton during its annual Memorial Day Parade. Hundreds of people lined the parade route to watch and wave to the different cars, trucks, army vehicles, clowns, bands and of course, the veterans. This year also kicked off the community picnic at Pelligrini Park where dozens turned out for their free hot dog or hamburger.

Service Unknown

There's a service provided to Newton residents that only a few know about-- sewer pipe cleaning.  Why is the city doing this, how much does it cost and why is it not paid for with taxes already collected were some of the questions discussed in this week's Board of Alderman meeting where an amendment was passed to recoup the cost of the service.

CAP Celebrates 20 Years

Since 1991, the Child Assault Prevention Program or CAP has been teaching children to be safe, strong and free.  Newton's Elementary program is the long continually run program in Massachusetts. It began in the fourth grade and has expanded to three grades per year.  It has helped over 17 thousand children.  CAP recently celebrated its 20th anniversary at the Newton Free Library with a packed house in the Druker Auditorium.

The Newton Community came together once again despite the rainy weather.  While some projects didn't get the complete attention needed, others did quite well.  Ali Scotti stopped by some of the project sites to see how well the volunteers were doing sprucing up the city.

Lawn Wins State Representative Seat

Democrat candidate and Watertown Councilor John Lawn won the special election against Waltham Republican James Dixon to fill the State Representative seat for the 10th Middlesex District.  Lawn won over Dixon with 1814 to 858 votes. Ali Scotti reports.

Police Accreditation

Osama Bin Laden is dead.  That’s what the President of the United States said to the world Sunday night after US Navy Seals brought an intense firefight on a Pakistani compound where Osama Bin Laden was believed to be hiding.  After searching for almost 10 years for the terrorist mastermind behind the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center, President Obama said Justice has been done. With two of the terrorist plotting their attack from a hotel in Newton, Newton News sent out Christine McCarthy to find out what Newton residents had to say about Bin Laden’s death.

Circle of Remembrance

May 4, 2011

It’s been 10 years since 4 Oak Hill Middle School children were killed when a bus skidded off a highway ramp and landed on its side in New Brunswick, Canada. The 42 band members and 6 adult chaperones were headed to Halifax, Nova Scotia to perform in a music festival when the crash happened.  To remember their family and friends, parents, former classmates, teachers, and others turned out for a circle of remembrance at Oak Hill Middle School. Christine McCarthy has more.

Water Sewer Hikes

May 4, 2011

Newton residents can expect to pay almost $94 dollars more in their water and sewer bills for FY 2012. That’s the recommendation the Public Works Department put in front of the Board of Aldermen this week. The 7.7% increase over FY2011 comes from the MWRA and funding the installation of new water meters. Here’s more from this week’s Committee of the Whole at the Board of Aldermen meeting.

Yom Hoshoah - Holocaust Remebrance

On Sunday, Congregation Mishkin Tefila held Yom Hashoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day.  Children and grandchildren of holocaust survivors and those who have passed- along with friends and family gathered at the Congregation to remember the history of what the Nazi regime did to six million Jews and millions of other innocent victims.  Jessica Buono has more.
