This past week, NewTV’s Original Programming Department (now known as Another Age Productions) attended Realscreen West (RSW). RSW is an entertainment conference with over 1,000 creators, buyers and distributors of entertainment and media converging at the Fairmont Hotel in lovely Santa Monica, CA to talk about the television industry.
With this being our first Realscreen event, we were on a fact-finding mission, trying to uncover trends in reality and non-fiction television, while also establishing contacts and relationships with network executives, distributors and production companies.
The access was unprecedented for our department. The ability to jump from speed pitching with A&E, to having a meeting with the Sales & Acquisitions executive at Red Arrow, to having lunch with the VP’s of development at CNN and History was extraordinary. We also attended a discussion with Lifetime’s VP of non-fiction. This is just a small example of the type of access the RSW conference provided.
Some of the production companies that we sat down with who have similar programming warned us that the week after RSW is busier than the actual week itself. This is very true, as following up is absolutely key to keeping them aware of us. The next step? We’ll be solidifying our pitches and sending them out to the networks, distributors, and production companies we connected with.
